civilian HOBO
Hobo Symbols are a system of signs created for traveling the rails. Carved into trees or fences, drawn with chalk or coal on sidewalks, rocks or doors near the homes that bordered the railroad, Hobo Symbols allowed hobos to ‘speak’ to other hobos. These images helped establish a sense of community for this romantic, anarchic and frequently dangerous way of life. Through these symbols, we access the vibrant spirit contained within this very American Mythology.
