Hobo Symbols were a system of signs that evolved throughout the early part of the 20th century. Carved into trees or fences or drawn with chalk or coal on sidewalks, rocks or doors near the homes that bordered the railroad, Hobo Symbols allowed Hobos to SPEAK to other Hobos enabling community for this romantic, anarchic and frequently dangerous way of life.
